The oldest folklore festival in Lithuania will celebrate its 45th anniversary on May 23–28, 2017! As 2017 is officially announced to celebrate the Year of Hillforts and of the National Costume in Lithuania, the organizers of the festival have also chosen to emphasize these matters.

This year’s festival will last for 6 days and will offer a wide range of events (almost 40 of them) suitable for the representatives of every generation.

The first day of the festival, May 23, will be dedicated to remember the roots of Lithuanian traditions. A musical performance will announce the opening of “Skamba skamba kankliai” which will take place on Tuesday, May 23, 17.00, at Vilnius Town Hall. The ceremony will also mark the vernissage of a photography exhibition by V. Daraškevičius and presentation of the album “Skamba skamba kankliai”, representing the most significant moments of the festival captured from the beginning until nowadays.

The second day of the festival, Wednesday, May 24, is a family celebration. In the afternoon, families will gather in the courtyard of Theatre, Music & Cinema Museum to learn traditional musical games for children, to sing and to dance. Afterwards, in the evening, youth folk groups will represent their repertoires.

This year’s festival is willing to claim that Vilnius is not only its Old Town: on Thursday, May 25, the festival brings its festive spirit to other districts of Vilnius and arranges performances of foreign guests and Vilnius folk ensembles in Trakų Vokė, Naujoji Vilnia and Justiniškės. Later on, an evening of traditional singing and dancing will take place in the courtyard of Alumnatas.

On Friday, May 26, a folk art & gastronomic heritage fair will gather by the Presidential Palace, at S. Daukantas square. The fair “Darbas meistrą giria” will last for 3 days and will offer a possibility for everyone not only to buy various crafts, but also to learn to make some themselves.

The traditional concert of festival guests will take place at 17.00 at S. Daukantas square where traditional music admirers will have a chance to listen to the performers from Ukraine, Switzerland, Estonia, Iran, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Belarus and a Lithuanian folklore ensemble “Saduto” from London, UK. The musicians will be playing their particular music instruments and wearing traditional costumes.

On Friday evening, May 26, the Year of Hillforts will be celebrated at Rokantiškės Hill by the meditative sounds of sutartinės, Lithuanian multipart songs, and S. Daukantas square’s stage will welcome a folk metal band “Thundertale”.

On Saturday, May 27, the main festival concert will celebrate the Year of the Lithuanian National Costume: the best Vilnius folk ensembles will perform songs, dedicated to the making of the traditional costumes.

On Sunday, May 28, the courtyard of Theatre, Music & Cinema Museum will welcome a children folk event “Saulytė” that will offer the concert of children and youth performers, and various entertainments for children.

The festival closing ceremony will invite everyone to attend the festival procession and to gather together to sing and dance at the festival closing concert.
